Clive Driscoll
Former DCI renowned for Stephen Lawrence & Surjit Athwal convictions
Clive Driscoll is a former Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector with almost 35 years’ policing experience, specialising in complex and high-profile investigations involving homicide, child abuse, domestic and sexual violence, racial violence and hidden harm. He held senior roles at Scotland Yard, including responsibility for policy relating to sexual offences, domestic violence and child protection, before becoming a Senior Investigating Officer within the Racial and Violent Crime Task Force. He is best known for leading the investigation that secured the convictions of two men for the murder of Stephen Lawrence, but his career also encompassed significant investigations into child abuse, gang-related violence, FGM and other complex forms of harm.

Clive also led the investigation into the murder of Surjit Athwal, securing the convictions of two family members despite Surjit’s body never having been recovered. The case became a landmark in the investigation of honour-based murder and demonstrated the importance of understanding family dynamics, cultural context and the barriers that can prevent hidden harm from being identified and prosecuted. Since retiring, Clive has continued to support victims and families and work addressing honour-based abuse, forced marriage and FGM, and serves as Deputy Chair and Trustee of True Honour. In 2019, De Montfort University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Laws in recognition of his contribution to justice and his pursuit of the truth in the Stephen Lawrence case.
